Lavender Steamer

Lately I’ve been trying to give up coffee…or at least to decrease the amount I drink.  It’s not so much the caffeine (although the older I get the more caffeine affects me in a negative way); but rather it’s that (as I have confessed previously) I use coffee as a cream and sugar delivery system!

So, what’s a girl who loves a warm beverage – especially late-afternoon – to do?  Well, a lavender steamer is one option.

Here’s what I did:

I poured one cup of skim milk in a saucepan and added to it 1 Tablespoon of culinary lavender.

Milk and LavenderI heated the milk over medium heat.  While it was heating I added ½ teaspoon of vanilla paste and 1 teaspoon of honey.

Honey BearI let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes.

Then I strained it and used a whisk to give it a little froth.

Straining SteamerFinally, I poured it into my favorite mug (which I affectionately refer to as my “upstairs mug” because my office is upstairs), snapped a few pics, and gave it a try.

Finished ProductIt was perfect!  It turned out to be a not-too-sweet, warm beverage that’s perfect for late-afternoon.  The lavender has a great calming/relaxing effect and a wonderful aroma.  And you know we eat/drink with our eyes and nose before we even put anything into our mouths.

I must confess that as I write this post I am sitting at Panera Bread with a cup of coffee in hand. I met a friend for coffee this morning and decided to stay and write.  I was soooo glad for the opportunity to catch up with my long-time friend,  Tracey.  In an effort not to let too much time pass before we meet again, we’ve already scheduled our next meeting!

So yes, I fell off the wagon and am having coffee.  It is decaf, but it does have half-and-half and sugar in it.  Hey, aren’t you glad to know that I’m not perfect?!!
